Oil and Filter Changes
When to change your vehicles oil has always been a bit of a minefield. When your vehicle is still under warranty you should keep to the vehicle manufactures recommendations.
Oil degrades over time and the worse thing for your vehicles engine is low annual mileage (i.e. short journeys). If your car does say 24,000 miles per annum and is serviced at every 12,000 then you would get an oil and filter change every 6 months, which is fine.
If your short journeys only total between 3000 and 5000 miles per annum and routine service was every 12,000 miles or 1 year (whichever comes first is usually what the manufacturers recommend), your oil and filter would only be changed once per year.
Some new cars now have extended service intervals to 20,000 miles. BUT all the best advice recommends an oil and filter change at least every 6 months! This keeps the engine in good condition.
If you don’t have your vehicle serviced at regularly intervals, always change the oil & filter fleet/ company vehicles with regular servicing with over 100,000 miles. It keeps an engine in much better condition than a similar 4yr old car with only 18,000 miles. (This applies to the engine only).
